About Chrysalis House

Chrysalis House, located in Lexington, Kentucky, was established in 1978 with 6 beds on the grounds of Eastern State Hospital. Today the organization is a premiere substance abuse treatment program serving over 200 women and their children annually.

Substance dependant women who enter Chrysalis House generally range in age from 24-38, though women as young as 18 may be admitted with no maximum age on admission. Generally, the women are low-income, have limited education and job experience, have backgrounds which include victimization, have one or more co-occurring mental health conditions and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Many are pregnant or postpartum and have limited access to quality health services.

Comprehensive services for women include substance use and metal health assessment and treatment; individual, group, family, couples, and child therapy; assistance with obtaining of prescription medications; support of involvement in 12-step and peer support groups; medical, dental, and visual services including assessment, follow-up care; prenatal and postpartum health care; wellness education and activities including exercise, stress reduction activities, and nutrition services; social services including assessment; employment and educational services; literacy training; computer training; grooming; clothing bank; credit counseling; and life skills training. All women and their families receive family and case management services.

Chrysalis House was one of the first substance abuse treatment programs to allow infants to reside on-site and older children to visit overnight. Over time services expanded to accommodate children up to the age of 2 in the residential facilities and all dependent children in independent living facilities. During the last twelve months, 21 healthy babies have been born to women in the program. Chrysalis House works closely with the Department for Community Based Services to reunite women with their children.

Providing treatment and prevention services to the children is important in breaking the cycle of addiction. The children served by Chrysalis House are provided licensed child care services by accredited child care providers. The child care program is recognized by STARS for Kids Now, indicating that the program exceeds standards of care. Services provided to the children include developmental assessment; medical/dental/visual care; mental health treatment; pro-social activities; and educational assistance.

Chrysalis House includes three residential facilities and 50 apartment units. Because permanent housing is critical to long-term success, credit counseling and home ownership are provided through a pilot program initiated by Chrysalis House called Supportive Housing Opportunities for Women. To date, SHOW has placed 403 women from Chrysalis House, Hope Center for Women, Virginia Place, and the Bluegrass Domestic Violence in permanent rental or home ownership. Ten of the women own their own homes. Continuing care is imperative and graduates are provided with support services on an ongoing basis and may always come back for help.
